15U Gold in Kingston

By: Nancy Miles

The 15U girls did it - they won Gold in the Bugarski Cup! Oh, man, that was fun! The girls played 2 round robin opponents - DRVC Orange and the Pegasus Hawks - before the playoff round began. Against DRVC, despite some initial jitters, the girls got pumped up and played very well. They won 25-22 and 25-12 and played a third set they won 15-10.

The Pegasus Hawks were tougher competition but what a back and forth series of sets! The ROOS lost very few points on serves (only 6 as I counted in the 3 sets they played!) had some awesome serving, blocks and spikes. It was a tough loss 25-27, 24-26. Just to prove they could do it, they won the third set 17-15.

The first playoff game was against the Mav Colts which the ROOS won 25-16 and 25-12. The Mavs had trouble with their serves which our girls took advantage of. Still, the girls were talking much more, had good serving and solid teamwork. They were definitely finding the holes in the Mavs court. Then came a 3 hour wait! Yikes - we were concerned about the girls energy level having to wait until 6 PM to play again. Their second playoff game was against the Ganaraska Wolves, who were ranked 1st in this tournament. The points lost on serves in the first set alone - 10 - indicated that the wait must have been a factor. The first set was close, the second not so much so - the ROOS won it 25-23, 25-12.

The final pitted the ROOS against the Durham Attack Red. Several light touches by Julia B and Karen were exactly what was needed in the early part of the first set, along with good serving from Charline. The score was back and forth, with the ROOS winning 25-21. Points lost on service was way down (I only counted 5 in the first set and 1! in the 2nd) and the girls played every ball for every point. ROOS were ahead 14-9 in the 2nd set when Durham staged a comeback to tie it, finding holes in our court. With the score tied at 17, Kayla took on service and gave us 5 consecutive points. Awesome - as was her jump to give us point #22! Alex was put in at the end, as in the first set, to seal the deal with a couple of super serves and the ROOS took it 25-22. You did it girls, just like you knew you could! Congratulations! On to the provincials…
