ROOS Summer Round-up

By: Chris Smeaton & Erika Peiper

For most ROOS, the summer is a time when most athletes are reminiscing about the past season, wishing they were playing or heading down to the beach courts to work on their beach game.

For others, the summer is just as competitive as the rest of the year. With Regional teams, OVA beach tour, and Camps, there were plenty of opportunities play volleyball.

By the end of June, 18U ROOS Leila Pieper and Norah McIntyre, had three OVA Beach tournaments and one Ottawa satellite event behind their back. They placed ninth on the OVA events and came home with the silver from Ottawa. This performance qualified them to participate on the Ontario Summer Games, held in Ottawa.

Before we get to the OSG results, the duo had to compete in the OVA Provincial Championships in Coburg. A few days after Leila returned Europe, the girls hit the sand and were bit rusty, but they steadily improved throughout the day. They lost their semi final in a close game but came back and won the bronze medal in Tier 2.

The volleyball continued for Norah and Leila They were back in Ottawa for the Ontario Summer Games and ADP camp in August. Training at Mooney’s bay, and relaxing at the athlete’s village at Carleton University filled the first couple of days. Thunderstix, muscots, thousands of young athletes, speeches, paragliders and music made the opening ceremonies memorable.

Sixteen teams participated in both the girls’ and the boys’ event. For two and a half days they fought on the beach with the finals held on Saturday morning. They won some, and lost some but at the end the day Leila and Norah beat another Region 6 team to finish 7th place.

After a brief relaxation, vacation they were on the road again to the Nationals in Toronto. There were 20 teams participating from Ontario, Quebec, BC and Alberta. It was a fun event with lots of great volleyball at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto. They played hard and well, showing their strength but could not overcome all the obstacles ahead of them: playing against Canada Team1 and Team2 was just too much. They finished 9th and wooed to try it again next year.

Region 6 Boys, and 18U ROOS, Dave Crystal and Trent Correy finished 8th at the Ontario Summer Games and tied for 5th at Provincials.

On the Indoor side, the Region 6 Boys team captured Gold at the Indoor event for the Ontario Summer Games. Infront of a home town crowd, the team consisting of 10 athletes, 9 of which were ROOS, and 2 ROO Coaches went undefeated throughout the tournament, and gave Region 6 its first ever Ontario Summer Games Indoor Volleyball Gold.
