Gold Medal for 15U Girls
By: Lise Grant
This weekend was an exciting one for the 15U Girls team as it saw them win a GOLD Medal during the Griffons 2nd Invitational Volleyball Tournament held at Cégep de L'Outaouias. Not knowing what to expect from the teams on the Quebec side as far as volleyball goes had the girls wondering just how the day's events would play out.
Pool play 1st saw the Roos up against Gatineau Volant Bleu with each team taking one game. Next up was the host team, Outaouais Griffon. Unfortunately for the Roos, the Griffon won both games but this didn't seem to dampen the Roos' spirit. They went on to play against St. Alexandre and once again, both teams took one game each. With all this, the Roos were in 2nd place after the morning pool play.
Quarter finals had the Roos up against Noranda Blues who were in 3rd place in their pool. Roos took both games from them and were off to the semi-finals to play against the 1st place team and host....les Griffon. After having lost to them in the morning pool play, the girls knew that they could win but they would need to stay focused and be on their game the whole time. Griffons took the 1st game 25-19 but the Roos came back and won the 2nd game by the same score, 25-19. Third game was taken by the Roos 15-13 and nudged the Griffons out of top rankings to go play for 3rd or 4th. After this, the Roos were ready to go. The Griffon were the team to beat and the girls did it. They now knew they were really in contention for the GOLD medal.
Gold medal round....phew.... Roos vs. Gilbert Théberge Warriors. Once again, we knew absolutely nothing about this team except that they came from Temiskaming, Quebec. Personally, I feel that not knowing what to expect is probably the best thing. That way you can't psyche yourself into thinking you can't play a team. Our girls went in KNOWING they could win and they felt that gold medal within their reach. The Roos played their hearts out against the Warriors and it showed. Never letting their emotions get the better of them, the took the match in 2 games and won the GOLD medal of the tournament. A very well deserved GOLD medal too.
On behalf of the girls I would also like to thank Kayla and Karen from the 14U Girls team for coming out and playing in the tournament. Due to a few injuries on the team, the 15U's are a little shorthanded and both Kayla and Karen fit in wonderfully.
Oh wait.... one more thing.... there seems to be a small matter of ICE CREAM that was promised to the girls if they beat Noranda Blue and if the Noranda team had less than 10 points.....far be it from me to say anything but there is a Dairy Queen just up the street from Monday night's practice gym.
Congratulations Ladies..... you played awesome and we're all looking forward to a great weekend at the Ontario Championships.
