Ottawa Kangaroos 16U Girls’ – Canadian Silver Medalists

By: Greg Maika

The Ottawa Kangaroos (ROOS) 16U Girls Volleyball team finished their competitive season on a high-note by winning the Tier 2 Silver medal at the 2008 Canadian East National Volleyball Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick (May 9th – 11th).

At the Nationals, the team demonstrated composer, maturity and desire throughout the 3 day event, losing only twice over the entire tournament prior to the championship game. Several games went to the third set with only a couple of points separating the winner from the loser. The team actually defeated one of the Tier 1 Gold Medal finalist teams during the preliminary round.

The Gold medal match was against the Griffons (Outaouais). The game went to a 3rd set with the first two split with extremely close scores. The final set saw the lead pass back and forth as the drive to 15 points was on the mind of all competitors.

Although the ROOs did not win gold, a Tier 2 Silver medal at the national level is one they all proudly wore on their return flight to Ottawa.

A Season of Growth and Highlights

Throughout the 2007-2008 season, the Girls’ U16 ROOs volleyball team has matured and developed into cohesive athletes capable of competing in the medal round of any tournament.

This team is comprised of 13 dedicated young women and 3 coaches from Ottawa and the surrounding area who have developed skills and a chemistry to compete at the national level.

The season began with a challenge seeing the girls lose their “Tier” ranking and dropping to “Zone”. It appears that this was a defining moment in the year. The turnaround started with the team regaining their “Tier 2” ranking by winning gold at the Bugarski Cup for Zone E in Kingston.

This was followed by many successful showings in both 16U and 17U tournaments throughout Ontario.

The Ottawa Kangaroos (ROOS) 16U Girls Volleyball team recently (April) competed at the Ontario Provincials in the Gold medal game in Newmarket, Ontario with the objective of becoming Ontario’s best Tier 2 16U girl’s team. Although they played hard, they came up a little short and were defeated by Phenix (Hawkesbury).

A Silver medal ranked the ROOS as the second best Tier 2 team in the province of Ontario and provided them with an opportunity to take their game to the next level….Silver at the Nationals!

ROOS on two, one two……ROOS !!!!
