14U Parents First Experience
By: Derek Yuen
The first tournament of the season began with an early 7:30 start at a local tournament in Orleans. It was exciting for all of the girls as the entire squad was put together and formed two playing teams. For many of the girls, this was their first Competitive Volleyball tournament to play in; only practicing for a couple of weeks together. Once the butterflies were gone; the teams geled very nicely together which was very nice to see. Returning players were ready to hit the courts full force, rookies were just as excited to get on the courts.
Unfortunately the 13u team went 1 - 9 for the day. Not to Worry! The level of play, enthusiasm and perhaps more importantly, the experience of competitive play at this level for the team was a great team building experience and the girls seemed to have fun too!! Confidence comes with play and the ability to adjust to situations. As the team executed moves from practices their level of playing and confidence increased and their sense of teamwork and chemistry amongst players started to showed in their responses to the other team. The girls also learning to adjusted to new shift positions on the fly and with support and encouragement from coaches, friends and parents they did this well!
During a long afternoon waiting between games, team building was seen not only on the court but also as the girls spent time together at a nearby park getting fresh air. They were seen socializing together (can you believe it from girls!!!) between games and more importantly watching and supporting the 14u team when they could.
The 13u's stayed as late as they could through the play off elimination rounds with strong team and vocal support for the 14U team. The 14U team had a very long day, they play exceptionally well and worked hard for their Silver medal performance.
On the whole it was a great outing for both teams
and as I said...Very Impressed and Job Well Done!!
